Overtime 101
The Gettysburg Adams Chamber of Commerce, Adams County’s oldest and largest business organization, will help business owners and human resources professionals better understand sweeping changes to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) during a seminar, “Overtime 101,” on Friday, Oct. 14.
Registration and breakfast begin at 7:30 a.m. followed by the program at 8 a.m., held in the Refectory of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg, 148 Seminary Ridge, Gettysburg.
Cost is $25 for members and $30 for non-members and includes a hot breakfast.
“Keeping up with business regulations can be tough, especially when you’re a small business owner who wears many hats,” said Carrie Stuart, chamber president. “This program will help our members ensure local businesses are compliant with the new rules and avoid overtime violations.”
The U.S. Department of Labor redefined the rules that determine who is entitled to overtime pay when working more than 40 hours in a week. The new rules would cover more salaried workers, taking the annual salary of employees who are eligible for overtime from $23,660 a year to $47,476 a year. Employers are expected to have a plan in place for handling workers’ payments by Dec. 1.
While 21 states have filed a lawsuit in federal court, saying the initiative will place a heavy burden on state budgets, little impact is expected. Private sector employers are advised to continue to plan for the Dec. 1 deadline.
Topics of the program include:
- What are the new overtime rules under the FLSA?
- How will the new overtime rules affect your business and employees?
- What should employers do now to ensure compliance by the Dec. 1 deadline?
The seminar is presented by Michael W. King, an attorney at Stock & Leader: Attorneys At Law. Directing the firm’s employment practice, he focuses on public and private sector labor and employment law, employment discrimination, Equal Employment Opportunity and other labor law compliance, employment contracts, education and school law, and the representation of employers in discrimination and other employment litigation.
This program has been submitted to the HR Certification Institute for review. This program may be submitted for SHRM credits.
